What Areas of the Body can be Treated with Liposuction?

Liposuction can be used to treat numerous portions of the body where troublesome fat deposits linger regardless of your diet and exercise routine.

SmartLipo is commonly used in the treatment of body areas including:

  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Love handles
  • Stomach
  • Waist
  • Upper arms
The laser-assisted liposuction procedure known as SmartLipo can also be used to target problem areas that traditional liposuction is sometimes not suited for. SmartLipo is often used to treat areas including:

  • Chin
  • Face
  • Neck
  • Ankles
SmartLipo is performed under tumescent anesthesia. This is a form of local anesthesia and is much safer than general anesthesia used in traditional liposuction.

SmartLipo can be used to treat any area of the body. It can be used on patients with all body types. Patents usually get equal or better results than traditional or ultrasonic liposuction.

The biggest benefit with SmartLipo is that there is very little bleeding and bruising. This significantly reduces down time.

Questions about SmartLipo

SmartLipo is an advanced liposuction procedure that utilizes laser technology for increased accuracy, smaller incisions and reduced bruising and discomfort over traditional liposuction.

Board-certified Connecticut plastic surgeon Dr. Stanley Foster is proud to offer the option of SmartLipo. Following are the answers to some frequently asked questions about this state-of-the-art procedure.

Am I a candidate for SmartLipo?

Your consultation with Dr. Foster will determine if you’re a candidate for SmartLipo. Traits of good SmartLipo candidates include:

  • Possessing stubborn fatty deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise
  • Being within your ideal weight range
  • Having healthy skin tone
  • Being in good general health

Although SmartLipo is safe and effective for many men and women, there are certain health conditions and medications that prevent some people from being able to undergo SmartLipo.

Is the SmartLipo procedure painful?

As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, SmartLipo will result in some lingering discomfort as you recover. Local anesthetic is provided prior to SmartLipo, and the laser technology used in the procedure minimizes pain and speeds recovery. The procedure itself is relatively pain-free, and residual discomfort is brief and easily controlled with over-the-counter pain medication.

How long will the results of SmartLipo last?

Because SmartLipo removes fat cells from the treated area, you will be less likely to regain weight in that part of your body. With a healthy diet and routine exercise, the results of SmartLipo will last indefinitely.

Male Liposuction

Body-contouring surgeries such as liposuction are often thought of and advertised as procedures for women.

But liposuction offers many benefits for male patients as well, and it is becoming an increasingly popular way for men to treat problematic fat deposits that are unresponsive to diet and exercise. Board-certified Connecticut plastic surgeon Dr. Stanley Foster welcomes male patients considering liposuction to schedule a consultation and learn about the advantages of liposuction.

In men, liposuction can be used to effectively remove fat cells from areas including:

  • Abdomen
  • Love handles
  • Chin
  • Neck
  • Jowls
  • Thighs

Dr. Foster treats gynecomastia patients with SmartLipo. If difficult glandular tissure is found, ultrasonic liposuction is used at the same time.

If you live in the Hartford, Greenwich, Waterbury or Glastonbury areas and would like to learn if you might be a candidate for male liposuction, please contact the office of board-certified Connecticut plastic surgeon Dr. Stanley Foster to schedule your personal consultation.

Is Liposuction a Good Option for Large Amounts of Belly Fat?

The actual amount of fat that can be removed during liposuction varies by patient and will be discussed during your consultation with board-certified Connecticut plastic surgeon Dr. Stanley Foster.

The removal of fat cells from the abdominal area, including love handles, is one of the most popular uses for liposuction. Fatty deposits around your stomach can be difficult to shed even through positive changes in diet and exercise.

However, it’s important to remember that liposuction is a body-contouring procedure designed to treat problem areas of fat; it is not intended as a weight-loss method. The risk of complications increases when liposuction is performed on patients who are significantly overweight.

Guidelines established by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recommend that no more than 5 liters of fat be removed in a single liposuction session. This is the equivalent of about 11 pounds.

Dr. Foster will tailor your individual liposuction procedure to your specific needs and will take into account factors such as your body type, weight, height and general health.

Exercise with Breast Implants

A common concern for women who undergo breast augmentation is how their new breast implants will impact their ability to exercise. For most women, there is no difference in their ability to exercise after breast augmentation. However, there are some activities which may be impacted by your procedure.

Runners may experience a difference in the balance and weight of their body after breast augmentation. By wearing a supportive bra, you should be able to minimize the difference your breast implants make in your performance. Most women find that speed and stamina are not significantly impacted.

Swimmers may find that it takes awhile to adjust to the changes in buoyancy and resistance caused by their breast implants. If you are a competitive swimmer, you may also find that your speed is slightly impacted. However, if you are just a recreational swimmer, this should not be much of a concern.

Breast augmentation can potentially affect tennis players as well. Some women find that their breast implants impact their backhand stroke. However, for most women, this is not a problem.

If you lead an active lifestyle, you should discuss your athletic endeavors with Hartford plastic surgeon Dr. Stanley Foster at your initial consultation. He can give you a better idea as to how your breast augmentation will impact your ability to engage in your desired activities after the procedure.

Please contact us today to schedule your initial consultation. Dr. Stanley Foster serves patients in Hartford, Greenwich, Waterbury, and Glastonbury, Connecticut.
